Today felt like a barbershop kind of day.   I’ve had this particular soap from Moon Soaps in my den for a while but haven’t yet featured it.  This has slowly been making its way up my rankings for barbershop styles scents that I own.   I’d describe this as having a bit of an old-school vibe to it (not to be confused with the Moon Soaps Old School soap which is more of a tobacco scent).  Scent notes are lemon, sandalwood, oakmoss, amber musk, bay, and nutmeg.  This is fresh and clean and it comes across as a very powdery citrus scent.  Strength on this one is about a 3-3.5 / 10.  That is normally too light for me but something about this one is just perfect.  It is strong enough to be very present through the shave, but soft enough that it won’t clash with any fragrance after your shave is complete.  Right now it is a coin flip between this Amaretto Speciale for favourite Moon scent.  Base on this is excellent as well.  Very easy to work with and dial in.  While not that rich buttery lather that some of the newer bases are known for, it is still very good to excellent by all standard shave metrics.  I have fallen out of love with all things menthol these days but Moon Soaps may change that.  It doesn’t interfere with the scent at all and at first, you don’t even realize there is menthol there.  When I was just finishing my first pass I came to the realization it was there with this subtle but present cooling.  That is how menthol in a soap should be done.  Bravo.

I also need to point out this new beauty of a brush that I picked up from Favour Turncraft.  I spotted his work on Instagram and this brush needed to be mine.  I reached out and this particular one hadn’t hit his store yet but was still available for purchase.  A few messages back and forth and it was on its way.  The handle is unique and is a stunner.  No coin but his newer brushes have that added.  Price point was excellent so I wouldn’t sleep on his offerings.  I dropped a boss knot (sourced from Viking) in it and while it looks great, I’m not 100% sold on how it feels.  It has just a bit more backbone than I like.  I’ll see if it loosens up a bit with use because it is right on the edge of where I’d like it a bit.  If it gives in a little bit, it will be a keeper, otherwise a reknot is in its future.

A great 3 pass shave today.  No complaints.  All for now – J
